Closing the Doors

At the end of October 2019, I’ve closed the cyber doors of my So Many Cookies home bakery. Why? Lots of reasons.

First, and most importantly, I was beginning to lose my love of baking. If there is a price I’m willing to earn to sacrifice my love of baking it is not a negative number, nor the potential for a slightly positive one.

Second, I realized to get enough orders to create a profit, I would need to bake a higher quantity then I was comfortable with.

Third, I felt internally sleazy about being the salesman who had to drag each purchase out of their customers. I didn’t like the dirty feeling I got when I was pushing people to buy my goods.

Fourth, I am still baking the same things I was baking a year ago, and I miss the experimentation. Not only because of a lack of time, but also due to the Cottage Food restrictions on what I could make. Once I’m not baking for profit any more, all those rules get lifted away.

Fifth, baking was never my first love, it’s my second. After handing out free food for over a year, the chorus of ‘You should sell this!’ became too persistent to not at least try it. So, I did, and I’m grateful. I now know that my food is of a high enough quality, if not a consistent one, worthy of purchase.

Maybe in the future, I’ll try again. But for now, my main focus is writing.
